Project SOLARIS is named after the famous science fiction novel by renowned Polish novelist Stanislaw Lem was founded and is operated by the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center in Torun (Poland), a branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Over a period of four years, the SOLARIS project will be engaged in a quest to discover extra solar planets orbiting double stars by employing a new method referred to as eclipse timing.

A team of astronomers has worked in conjunction with APM Telescopes and ASA Astrosysteme's engineers to develop robotic telescopes for this purpose. Two of the fully autonomous systems are already operational, while two more systems will be going online within the 1st and 2nd quarter on stream during 2012. The Solaris Project consists of three independent locations within the southern hemisphere (Australia, Argentina and South Africa). The project consists of a total of four ASA professional line telescopes (three 500mm ASA Ritchey-Chretien f/15 telescopes with one 500mm Cassegrain f/9) mounted on four ASA DDM160 German mounts using direct drives and high precision encoder technology for unrivaled tracking performance as well as pointing accuracy and speed. Placed on ASA's especially custom designed equatorial pier, the telescopes can track freely through 355 degrees without the need to flip while passing the meridian.

Solaris was selected by the European Union's Research Council together with five other projects out of total of 2200 applicants. Established by the EC in 2003, the European Research Council is funded via the EU's 7th Research Framework Program. SOLARIS is also receiving funding from Poland's Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
